I hear Philips webcams work well under linux. Here's a website to check out: 
http://www.linux-sxs.org. Find "USB" on the menu on the left and then click on "USB 
webcams" in the frame that opens up to the right.

As far as software there's gnome-meeting. I've never used it so I don't know.

I would recommend staying away from Intel webcams as I have one and I'm having trouble 
finding information about getting it going under linux. Anyone get an Intel pro-pc cam 
working?
