I can't see it being a permission problem as cdrecord -scanbus has to be run as root and it still came up blank. My kernel upgrade was with the kernel-2.4.18-18mdk-1.1mdk.i586.rpm, should I not have expected this to be configured for SCSI emulation needed for cdrws? btw, when I reboot back to the stock 8.2 kernel (2.4.18-6mdk) the cdrw works fine. thanks for your ideas Ross
