You mentioned the two different versions of gcc installed being the
problem.  That's not quite right.  You had two versions, installed, yes.
But only one of them has all the components it needs (whichever one you
removed, didn't).  More than likely gcc 2.96 is installed as well as
gcc-c++ and gcc-cpp.  But I'll bet that gcc 3.01 did not have gcc3.0-cpp
installed.  Not having the cpp (C PreProcessor) package installed is
typically what gives the "cannot create executables" error.
