This might be worth a shot. I notice you have only 1MB onboard video. Some Compaq machines have a bios setting where you can assign more ram to the onboard video solution. From the sound of your problem, I would think only 1MB assigned to video is preventing X and KDE from loading, and it has to revert to the konsole display.
