What would be easier would be to use a database abstration layer.  IIRC,
there is one for php named AODBC (could be thinking of something else
though).  It simply makes your calls to a database lookup/write all look
the same and you simply pass one variable that tells the actual routines
which are doing the conection what type of database you are connecting
to.

If I have the name wrong, I apologize.  I know that I had to set it up
when I was setting up snort with ACID.  I can't imagine that perl
wouldn't have a similar module with similar functionality.
