I've run into a bit of a problem concerning printing myself so I'll jump into this thread and ask away.
I always go with cups anymore. I don't even care to install anything for the old lpr/lpd system. I don't know when or how this occured but lately I am stuck with lpr and cannot go back to cups. I can START cups OK, and it is set to start at bootup, but if I open up kcontrol and try to change the print system from lpr to cups, it refuses to let me even if I am logged in as root. It flashes quickly and goes right back to lpr-based printing. I am running Mandrake 8.2 with KDE 3.0.1. I have the following cups-related rpms installed: cups-1.1.14-2mdk cups-drivers-1.1-48.1mdk libcups1-1.1.14-2mdk cups-common-1.1.14-2mdk The switch to kde 3.0.1 was relatively recent and MAY have coincided with the loss of ability to use/print through cups. How do I get cups back? I have tried running printerdrake whatnot but am not able to get cups back as my one and only printing system.
