There's a possibility that the local X server is missing some functionality. See if you can ssh into the box from another Linux machine and then start SSH through the exported X session:
E.g., if the crashing OpenOffice is on BoxA, and BoxB is the second Linux machine: BoxB: ssh -X BoxA (enter password) [user@BoxA] export DISPLAY=BoxB:0 [user@BoxA] ./soffice This will at least eliminate the possibility of an X server problem.
