It is an AT&T T1 which I was using from another machine at the time. I know 
when the gateway is down.  If this machine is having trouble reaching the 
gateway it is because networking is not functional on this machine. I suspect 
that is not the case because I can ssh in from another machine during this 
ugly process and stop named which allows the boot to proceed normally except 
that httpd is often not functional.
