Jim & Jack, Sounds to me like the 'dreaded' rndc.conf failure. try the named -g command. If you have an error concerning the 'couldn't add command channel 127.0.0.1#953' then you need to configure the rndc.conf information in the /etc/rndc.conf and /etc/named.conf files.
Check man -k rndc and run the rndc-confgen. HTH. This is NO Kludge, but rather a FIX of this problem.
