In answer to the query,

Yes, I have 'hdd=ide-scs'i in the lilo.conf file. MMC/ harddrake sees the 
burner. When you try to mount it, the error "device /dev/scd0 does not 
exists". Yet, MMC will clearly show that /dev/scd0 is the correct device. 
When you chase down the /dev directory, the device file is missing. My 
problem is that I do not know how to trigger harddrake into creating the 
missing device file (/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target3/lun0/cd  alias /dev/scd0)

I did try disconnecting the IDE cable and re-booting. But, alas, no change 
when I re-connect the cable.

Perhaps, someone can show how to manually create the missing file?
