I already tested this by another means. I changed the drives FROM using
supermount to being manually user-mountable. I then manually mounted them
and tried again. Same result. Both CDROMs and my zip did this.

I am currently rebuilding/installing the 2.4.18 kernel from 8.2 (again)
because of this problem and the many, many problems I've been having with the
2.4.19 kernel and usb and pcmcia, particularly in regards to 801.11b devices.
They will NOT work on either my laptop nor desktop systems with the 2.4.19
kernel but they have worked just fine when I had 8.2/kernel 2.4.18 installed.

The issue with supermount may be fixed in the 2.4.19-24mdk kernel that was
suggested, but I do not trust that the usb and pcmcia problems are fixed.
