You have to specifically compile in support for upto 4GB ram (theres another option for upto 16GB) if you have more than ~900MB. The enterprise kernel supports upto 4GB ram, and will be installed during install if the installer detects more than ~900MB. The kernel.org kernel has these same 'limitations'. I reality, you are changing the addressing mechanism the kernel uses.
