Resolvement: the CUPS config apparently was set to poll the printer
every 30 seconds (!?). We #'d the line, and it seems the problem is
gone, but I find it odd that the problem even occurred in the first
place - perhaps not an inherent problem with the 30-sec poll setting
(by default, because I didn't touch it), but with the end result.
Weird...but it's fixed, and now I concentrate on bigger and better
things.
