I had a similar problem with the 2.4.20 kernel on a RedHat system ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=91557 ). If you follow the link there's a patch to the AC97 drivers that restores sound. I had used this patch before RH shipped a working kernel. It may solve the problem for you.
