This is an uptime report for the enitre Microsoft netblock, they sure are using a lot of Linux and FreeBSD (not to mention moving a lot of their sites to akamai on Linux).

But the funniest part are the average and maximum uptimes.
Linux shows uptimes arround 300-350, while the windows guru's seem
unable to keep their systems up for the same amount. They peek at
arround 150!

Yep Bill is becoming a real fan ;-)

Well like anyone who can hire the very best business managers, Bill & co. can see the hand writing on the wall. This is why that same group of folks owns huge shares in open source companies like RedHat. Not because they want to shut these companies down but rather because they recognize that Windows market dominence wont last forever. It can't simply because thier business model of selling media liscences will eventually be out of date i.e. static media (such as any sort of recording) becomes so cheap to manipulate and transmit over time that it becomes a loseing battle. Microsoft knows this which is why they started really working hard to diversify thier assets. I woudn't be surprised at all to evenually see an open source verison of Windows or to see them adopt Linux in the next 10-15 years.

Subtle but very significant distinction: Microsoft does not have "market dominence" in the server market. UNIX, along with Linux hold market dominence where Microsoft will never have it, the enterprise environment.
