on further investigation, this turns out to be because the DISPLAY
environment variable is not being set on the 9.0 box since updating X11.

what i'm not understanding well is, one, where and by what did it use
to be set in the previous version; two, was this change intimately
connected with the security fix in the update (i.e., is it safe to
change it back); and three, how the fsck can any X11 programs run
successfully on the local box without having DISPLAY set...?!
