Thanks for the suggestions; I ended up downloading Mandrake Cooker 2.4.22 from rpmfind.net , and confuguring it to death.After removing all the modules that I'll never need, the startup time of the machine has halved. (understandably, Mandrake installs almost everything, and whenever possible, as modules.)
