I suspect it's actually a Gnome thing, at it happens even if I manually 
select the image in the Appearance Manager.  You can find the bug report 
here; can anybody else give it a shot and let me know if they can 
reproduce it?

Though not severe, it seems like a lot of people would experience this 
problem.  If it's truly a bug, I'm surprised it hasn't been reported 
before (though I might have missed a previous bug report when searching).
