I can only speculate but for me, in general, if I run something from the
terminal I like it to be quiet unless I tell it otherwise. So if you want
the behavior you mentioned --debug might be the way to go (although that may
also be overkill, not sure).

I've also considered implementing some sort of "console" for F-Spot through
an addin that would provide a way for F-Spot to communicate with those that
wanted it. It would be helpful for things like a status report after import
(did any fail? did metadata parsing fail for any of the imported pictures?
if duplicates were detected which files were they? etc..)

Unfortunately it's hard enough to find time to work on the bugs but I'm
trying. :)
