In theory you shouldn't have to alias gmcs to mcs. gmcs is more of a relic these days. Having said that though, you do need a fairly new version of mono (I don't have a number off the top of my head).
Dougie: What version of mono do you have? If you can get up to 4.x you won't need anything like gmcs, etc).
