The Yamaha R6 motor is in the order of 113 hp and the Suzuki GSXR motor is in the order of 110 hp - both at the back wheel. Dyno charts I have see for the 494 put it under 100 hp, closer to 95 - at the crank.
I believe the CVT can be better than the gearbox mainly due to the fact that the driver cannot screw up due to poor shifting skills. An air shifter on a bike gear box can help neutralize the CVT advantage. I have been riding bikes since the early 70s and rode my first snow machine in the 60s. Both drive trains are great and provide more fun every day. The CVT makes F5 unique as does the two stroke motor. I am not sure we would be doing the class a favour by going over to a bike motor. (The R6 motor at 15K is bearutiful music however) If the class needs a new motor, I truly believe another two stroke - snow machine based unit would be the way to go. If we went to a bike motor we would then be in competition with DSR and F1000. Then we would want shocks like DSR and an LSD. Would it be fun - absolutely! But there would be a cost - we may still be the lowest price entry racing class, but we would add 10 to 15K. A new roller F1000 is 33K. There will probably be used units available this fall for 30K - the price of a new F5 with a bike motor and shocks. I think we would ultimately become extinct because of price. The CVT, the rubber pucks and the solid rear axle keep us alive because it helps keep us inexpensive. > I think the best F500 engines are a bit over 100 hp.
