Hi Mike.

If you switch to some other forum to troubleshoot your git issues, could you
please post a message here telling us where it is. I am following this
discussion (and would like to continue to do so) to save myself some pain
and aggravation when I go through the same process.

Yes, it is a little painful.

I'll finish the investigation and report here in this forum for the benefit
of Git newbies trying to get started with Factor, myself included,
especially those who might want to use the Git GUI. I'll be working through
the tutorial for the Git GUI soon. I expect to clear up my concepts and
make a terse report here on the "stuff that matters". The Pro Git doc
Chris recommend was good, but did not clear up my understand of pull. I
still have some reading to do in that, but there is the tendency to hop
around, and only a very few of these docs are really good. The other docs
I'm finding are full of command line details, which is practical, but they
don't take care to explain carefully the concepts in terms of hard effects
(file manipulations), so that you don't proficiently wander off into the
abyss with those commands. I'm sure all the Git prose is "clear" once
you've got a working mental model, but I can't quite build that model from
what I've been reading.

Standby. I'm interleaving my study of the Git stuff with other Factor
issues.

freshly cloned and pulled repo

I imagine that someone has seen the problem before and already knows the
issue.

Has anyone tried to verify a fresh clone and seen this problem? I suppose
it doesn't matter much, if the problem still exists for all of us, and
hasn't caused any problems. Then, again, I may be the only one doing the
verify; it's convenient from the GUI. I think most of us are using the Git
Bash.

Can someone explain this? How serious a problem is this? Does it indicate
corruption in my local repo?

Would it be possible to keep out-of-topic questions out of this list (this
one should be posted on a git users mailing-list since it has nothing to do
with Factor)? They seem to arrive faster than I am able to mark them as
"ignored".

I have to agree. Generally I'm in favor of helping out where possible, but
the discussion here is overwhelming and not about Factor.

If you want some iterative help like this, perhaps IRC or other sources
would be better?

Don't misunderstand - your Factor ideas are very welcome and encouraged.

Thanks,

John.
