I wrote a "packed struct" vocabulary that aligns to single bytes, if you
need that behavior.

Using it, you can see that:
( scratchpad ) PACKED-STRUCT: packed-junk { a char } { b ushort } ;
( scratchpad ) packed-junk heap-size .
