Yet fail2ban isn't triggered. The fail2ban logs state:

INFO   Creating new jail 'ssh'
INFO   Jail 'ssh' uses Gamin
INFO   Added logfile = /var/log/auth.log
INFO   Set maxRetry = 6
INFO   Set findtime = 300
INFO   Set banTime = 600
INFO   Jail 'ssh' started


There is no jail by default named "ssh", so can you provide the jail configuration for "ssh"?

Also, what OS and fail2ban version are you running?
