KATHMANDU, NEPAL, April 4, 2005: A 17th-century icon of the Hindu God
Vishnu has been stolen from Nepal's world famous Pashupatinath temple,
Xinhua reports. The two-and-a-half-foot tall Shankar Narayan icon was
stolen Sunday night from the heavily guarded temple located in the
city. Pashupatinath temple is one of the seven Unesco World Heritage

know about the theft until a construction worker reported it to police.
"I noticed that the icon was not in its place at midnight and I
immediately informed the police," the worker told reporters Monday. The
icon was placed on the right side of the temple's main gate. Besides
the five-member police beat, the Pashupati Area Development Trust has
deployed 18 security personnel for safety of the temple. Police said
