What is the source of this claim, a rumour ?

I thought I had heard at least one Shankaracharya state this, and this was easily found on the web:

He is not without critics amongst his peer group, there are others, coincidentally also from the Jabalpur area of India, who have openly disparaged him. According to Osho World Online Magazine- June 2004, Osho (formerly Bhagavan Rajneesh) had this to say:-

Anything Rajneesh says is an egregious case of the pot calling the kettle black.

More serious are the allegations said to have been made by a fellow-disciple of Guru Dev and now himself a Shankaracharya in his own right, Shankaracharya of Dwarka, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati in an interview with a former TM teacher:-

Shankaracharya: This is true. In reality, preaching, initiating, guiding people engaged in spiritual pursuits, is the duty of those who are born in a Brahmin family.

So then Amma and Christ shouldn’t be teaching either. They both had humble beginnings.

If he is a follower of Sanatan Dharma (the Hindu religion), he should not do what he is doing. This is against the orders of his Guru. Moreover, making others write puujya (revered), calling himself Maharishi (a great seer) is totally inappropriate. No assembly of saints has either conferred upon him a title of Maharishi nor has announced him puujya. In the ashram he was doing the work of typing and writing and translation. Then he became a sadhu. However, he has never practiced yoga. (...)

IMO Maharishi is most certainly a yogi by most anyone’s definition. People may be surprised to hear me defending MMY because I often come across as a critic. I have trouble with the sex and money business, but I have no doubts that Maharishi is one powerful dude. His darshan, as you know if you have ever been anywhere near him, is off the charts. His intellect, while nutty in recent years, has been extraordinarily brilliant at times. Who among us would have been capable of doing what he did? Proximity and service to Guru Dev were his spiritual practice, and a legitimate one if I understand scriptures correctly.
