The mystic syllable OM is the *symbol* for the pranava, but it is not the pranava itself. If Om was to be used in meditation, then I guess Patanjali would have mentioned it. In fact, if a person chants Om they may go broke and wind up penniless, just like the majority of people who live in India today. My mantra starts with OM but also has a bija mantra in it.
