According to some psych theories, like the one described here, all
behavior including altruistic behavior is based on maximizing pleasure
and minimizing pain. Does that make it egoistic? I think ego can
serve an excellent purpose by putting order into one's life, for
example, by avoiding getting scammed by con artists, even when the con
involves one's favorite charity cause. And ego can serve to cause a
lot of pain for others when it runs rampant to control them.

I think ego gets a bad rap. It's a good little custodian of the body
when it knows its place and does its proper job. It's a tyrant when it
takes over the bod, and then the building, then the city, then the
country, then the world!
