Actually the Maharishi advocated a tantric approach to Advaita Vedanta, seen from the POV of Advaita Vedanta. Advaita Vedanta is foundationally different from the Trika/Kashmir Shaivism. They're so different, Swami Lakshman Joo devotes a whole chapter to it in one of his works.
