Interesting. My memory of the novels is faint, since I read them as they came out, by that memory was always of James Bond as *human*, not the kind of shoot-me-as-many-times-as-you-want-and-I'll- still-get-up-and-flirt-with-you caricature he devolved into in the films. There's a scene in Casino Royale that I just loved -- Bond (Craig) is on a break from a high-stakes poker game; he has to be back at the table in five minutes or forfeit. The trouble is, his shirt is covered with blood because he just had to tumble down several flights of stairs and kill a couple of bad guys, one of whom sliced him up pretty good before he died. Then he had to hide the bodies. Then he comes back to his room, and is standing in the bathroom Bond is staring into the mirror, and you see what he sees -- a man in considerable pain. Craig makes you realize that Bond is HURTING. He *feels* the pain of having been stabbed; his body *feels* what it's like to roll down several flights of stairs. He'd like nothing more than to curl up in a ball and whimper. But he has to be back at the table in five min- utes, so he pours himself a big glass of whisky, downs it in one swallow, and then looks at him- self in the mirror as his face settles back into that mask of icy calm he needs in the game. It's a very effective scene, IMO. And none of the previous Bonds could have pulled it off. > I thought Timothy Dalton made a great Bond and that > Pierce Brosnan was not right for the role. Totally agree.
