activity in the visual cortex in the brain sometimes is interpreted as a
pattern. Similarly, neuron activity in the retina can create lights (rub
you eyes, you li see lights). Many people have this experience, whether
meditating or just closing their eyes before they sleep.>

So it could be a result of a random physiological response you are
saying. First you must make the massive assumption that randomness can
exist. Second you must assume that the organs and flesh of the body is
the prime reality, and that the subtle body of the energies that make up
your physical reactions and your brain activity is secondary, and
unimportant. Both these assumptions are questionable at best, but more
likely simply irrational and whimsical. Can you say for sure that the
mental images picked up by the mind are merely effulgences of random
physiological phenomena, or could the physiological phenomena (eg.
"random activity in the visual cortex" as you put it.) be reacting to
more subtle changes in the underlying field that ermeates your brain?
Which are you willing to subscribe to macroscopic classical physics, and
which to subtle quantum effects? Which will you catogorize in one camp,
and which in another, and how will you defend your choices? By what
yardstick will you partition and reduce the universe to managable
segments, and will that unit of measure be univerally accepted in all
quarters such that your control over the worldscape is consolidated and
solidified to the extant that you would be satisfied with?
