Was Merton talking about Obama? He had dreams of his father. He trusted his vision of rising from humble beginnings to greatness. He obeyed the attraction of his inner voice to be president and didn't listen to anyone telling him he needed more experience. He identified with his birthright of greatness so strongly, the shear force of his confidence in his vision, communicated by the media, gave people suffering from white guilt the impression that he really is the Messiah.
