So when people refer to the inner circle as being "as mad as hatters" they're really quite accurate. The term "as mad as a hatter" (cv Alice in Wonderland) came from a time when hatters routinely used mercury for something to do with hats, got mercury poisoning and went mad. It explains a lot.
