I find this "reducing valve" theory fascinating (though not sure I really grasp it yet). This study seems very, very tentative though (nothing wrong with that!). I don't see the connection between the two things in this key idea (self transcendence): "(the) tendency to become so absorbed in an activity that they lose track of time and place and whether they feel a strong spiritual connection with other people or with nature." That's two disconnected things just put together ad hoc, no?
