What Vaj thinks of as "outside reality-checking": "I was sitting there at close range watching Mahesh go on about something when his head very clearly took on the look of a beast. It shocked me to say the least. I was sitting next to a friend of mine (who later became a prominent Doctor in So. Cal). I turned to him and whispered 'did you see that?'. He looked shaken himself and said 'I sure did. Did he look like an animal there for a minute?'."
