Dr John's speech during GP made me realize
that, ignoring the quantitative aspect,
the first sounds of Sanskrit alphabet,
namely a (aa) i (ii) u (uu) and R,
actually (almost) form a sandhi variant
of the word 'aayus' (as in aayur-veda;
in pausa 'aayuH').
That's because when 'i' is followed by
another vowel, it changes to its semi-vowel
counterpart which in English is written
as 'y' , as in 'yes'. (For instance in
Scandinavian languages, including the non-
Indo-European Finnish, that semi-vowel is
written as 'j'. That's why Swedes tend
to pronounce 'John', which is, I believe,
a Swedish name, too, as 'Yonn'.)
