Beats me, though I don't think the 'we were here first' argument works 
well. 

Probably because the Israeli state was created by the British from 
seized Arab land in the late 40's, in order to weaken the Arab 
nationalist movement. No one ever goes for that stuff, and there has 
been war there ever since.
