I sit facing forward because that seems to be the easiest and most natural way to do it. Otherwise neck problems. I recall the East and North instructions. But I also remember Neil Patterson being asked this question and he said it did not matter, though the East and North were already being given to Purusha. In the absence of a gravitational field or being on Earth, what direction would one face? If there were a meditator on the International Space Station what orientation should they have? Earth-bound spiritual types never seem to consider questions like this.
