Vera Farmiga's directorial debut "Higher Ground" would probably interest many here because it is a story of a woman told over three decades dealing with religious faith and doubts. I found it to be an excellent film and will be looking forward to her next directorial projects.
It co-stars John Hawkes ("Lost") and a host of other actors and non-actors including Vera's sister Tiassa, who had no aspirations to become an actress. Vera, who also played the lead character, needed someone to play a teenage version and her sister was a good choice so she drafter her for the part. As a result Tiassa also had a role in the successful FX series "American Horror Story." There's also a lot of good music in this film, especially re-adaptation and harmonization of traditional hymns. Available on DVD and Bluray. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1562568/
