I'll take this place, any day. I remember this picture I saw on the New Yorker 
once, showing the view of the west coast [of the US] from the east, losing 
detail with distance - it was meant to be funny, and it was. You have the same 
simplistic view of this country, driven by the media story being fed you. Its a 
complicated place, a big place, and exceptionally active. So, yeah, be 
gullible, get sucked in by all the media stories, and miss the forest for the 
trees. PT Barnum would love you.
