Hard to tell what might be the real reason, but in the US of A:

50 years ago, 1 in 10 000, nowadays 1 in 90 children has some form
of autism. "Luckily", mainly amongst those of Caribbean, African
or Asian descent. Especially common amongst Somalis of Sweden
and the USA. Almost non-existent in Somalia?

One possible reason seems to be propionic(?) acid produced in
the gut by Clostridium difficile especially after anti-biotic
treatment??
