What really happened was the Transcontinental Railroad which needed a strong federal government for it to be accomplished. Which meant that some states rights had to go away. Of course it was the rich who wanted the railroad.

And those *jackasses* were correct. Unfortunately, slavery was a legal institution written into the United States Constitution. Slaves were considered property. Today, your personal bank accounts could be *liberated* via the internet and if the feds did nothing about it or were involved in it...WTF! One could justify that your personal money was needed to help the poor, retire the national debt and it was your moral obligation to forfeit it. We have laws to protect rights , life and property. If the law is out dated, you change it through the legal process, even if that means changing the constitution.< I'm unfamiliar with SC's specific declaration but I doubt it was just one issue as you do write, Declaration of the Immediate Causes, causes being plural. you might read the Declaration of Independence. The first paragraph states it clearly. I'm paraphrasing, When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the bands that connect them with another let them list their grievances... yada yada yada. This is exactly what the southern states did. Right or wrong, it was constitutional. Abraham Lincoln violated the constitution repeatedly from beginning to end. Secession was never brought before the Supreme Court because the court would have ruled it legal. Jefferson Davis was never put on trial for treason because had his case gone to the Supreme Court, the court would have ruled in his favor.< The issue of slavery could have been dealt with in a much better way. One that was not emotional, which lead to the war. The Constitution would have needed amending and slave owners fairly compensated. This approach would have, or at least probably would have, prevented a costly war, lost lives and fortunes not to mention the resentment that lead to Jim Crow laws, segregation and the way former slaves were treated. Race relations would be in a totally different place today.< So yes, there were jackasses but they were on both sides.

Actually, the jackasses in SC claimed that what the federal guv'ment was doing was unconstitutional and what other states (Yankee states) were doing was also unconstitutional because these states were violating Article Four of the US Constitution which required that slaves that had escaped to other states must be returned to their owners in the states they had escaped from. The Northern states were not complying, ergo they had violated the agreement that had formed the Union, thus the original states had the right to leave the union since other states were not compliant with all article of the agreement. This was the specific reason stated for secession in South Carolina's *Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union.*

What you're suggesting was pretty close to what the founding fathers intended in the first place. Each state was it's own master. They, the state governments, knew what was best for their own people and what their people wanted. The feds were there to protect the rights of those states to be independent of one another. By the 1860s, the whole thing flip flopped. The states were there to support the federal government in their dominion over the individual states.

Not quite. That was based on something else. This division makes sense because each region has it's own specific geographical needs that can be governed appropriately. But I'm not holding my breathe. Of course it could come out of a complete economic collapse but more likely the rich will want to commit suicide with a global war.

I'm just waiting for the other foot to fall.

Yeahhhh, we tried something like that here in South Carolina in 1860 - didn't work out too well.

Break it up into the "Nine Nations of North America". I've been an advocate of this ever since the book came out in 1981. It's based on the way the American Indians looked at the country by geographical distinctions.

But the rich will cry because we'll be taking their toys away from them.
