The Aztecs believed in "teotl"; an impersonal force that permeates and animates the universe. The Mexica "gods" themselves had no existence as distinct entities apart from representations, statues and figurines, of teotl. It's not complicated.

They stopped the carnage of human sacrifices committed by the Aztecs to propitiate their gods as part of their culture for centuries. IMO, the success of the Conquistadores was mainly due to the cooperation of the tribes who were subjugated and victimized by the Aztec culture. So, karma played a big role in eradicating the evil of sacrificing people to a nonexistent Aztec god. Nonetheless, I'm not condoning the atrocities that were committed by the Conquistadores to the aboriginal peoples.
