The idea that one cannot "reach" Enlightenment is a typical Neo-Advaitist idea that is only partially correct. The other side of the Self component (since everything/everybody has not been other than the Self); is the accompanying physiological changes; some of which has been described since ancient times in terms of release of the "knots". In the context of more modern notions of stress-release, MMY alone has been at the forefront of equating Enlightenment with corresponding levels of stress reduction (keeping in mind that active alertness is not to be equated with a completely comatose body which may also have minimal stress). Thus, when isolating the physiological correlates to Enlightenment (known and unknown), we see that there is indeed, a linear progression. Therefore, seen in this light, one can "reach" Enlightenment even though all is already the Self. Besides, everybody even on an intellectual level, having read the Upanishads, various Buddhist texts, and B.G.; already "knows" that the world = the Self, and the Self = the world. To say therefore, that nobody "reaches" Enlightenment is to totally evade the whole structure of "seeking"...even to go so far as many of the Neo-Advaitins like HWL Poonja, as to say "Give up all techniques and just BE" If, indeed, there were no "reaching", then TM would be pointless to practice. But, all TM'ers with any significant length of practice are quite familiar with TC being maintaied for longer periods of time. The property, "longer periods of time" equates to linearity. Thus, people do "reach" Enlightenment due to the physiological component and the subjective element of time itself: even though time is ultimately delusional, in terms of ordinary relative perception, time has an arrow. The reasons behind the arrow of time are many; but we need not know the precise reasons behind the arrow in order to experience it.
