Surely you don't want the person doing the mass killing to *not lose*.

There are many definitions of what "to lose" means. It would be great if
killers and sociopathic monsters could see the error of their ways and suddenly
put the gun down, scratch their heads, blink their eyes and realize what they
really want to do is go and knit a pair of booties for their neighbor's newborn
but, that is not usually the case. But if it were, then they are suddenly
"winners" as opposed to losers who, (in their inability to feel anything
worthwhile), have just gunned down one or more people who are also the
"losers".

Re "The number of mass shootings stopped by armed civilians in the last three
decades is zero":

You might be being fooled by this statistic.

Think about it: a mass shooting is defined by "Four or more people are
actually killed, not including the perpetrator".

Now imagine: a would-be "mass shooter" walks into a shopping mall and kills
one, two or three people. At that point an armed civilian takes action and the
murderer is stopped in his tracks.

As four or more people were not killed in this imagined incident it will *not*
be classified as a "mass-shooting event"! But it would have been if the
have-a-go hero hadn't been there.

 Neat, huh?

Not really. It is all so much bluster and conjecture on everyones part.
Fighting guns with guns is like fighting hate with hate. In the end, everyone
loses.
