Chicago, 1893: first major introduction of Eastern religious teachings into the
U.S. (although there was no significant "trickle down" influence into the
larger masses of people below the Chicago and NY elites of that time).
Vivekananda perhaps believed that his brand of Hinduism would be immediately
accepted as a "truth" in the same way he believed/experienced it as a
transmission from Ramakrishna.
Unfortunately, he had little understanding of the overall psyche of people at
that time; and history had to wait much longer to the time of Yogananda and MMY
for a significant percolation of the concept and practices of "Transcendence"
to take root in America.
English writer G.K. Chesterton in 1925 called the Parliament of World
Religions "a Pantheon of Pantheists".
(obviously factually incorrect since Vivekananda classified himself as an
Advaita Vedantist, and the modern organization that evolved out of
Vivekananda's efforts is the "Vedanta Society", not the "Pantheist Society".
