In the late 60s to early 70s, the average American car was in the $2000 to $3000 range. A Porsche 911 was $6,000 and change, and if you spent time on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston/Brighton, you would see more 911s in one afternoon than you would see Porsches of all types in a year today. I remember taking a leisurely drive up to the north shore in my first car and seeing an exotic car called a Jensen Interceptor.
