Most all practice or obtaining "mantra siddhi" (the true siddhis) are 
done with a key or guru mantra preceding their practice.  That enlivens 
them.  Once the practitioner has obtained "mantra siddhi" or the point 
where the siddhi is enlivened then they can be invoked on their own.
