Craig, We are also using Friendly URLs without the servlet.  We are using the go.cfm with URLs like http://urlhere.com/go.cfm/textiles_pattern_other http://urlhere.com/go.cfm/accessories_lighting_chandeliers We had to do a an quick tweak to the buildlink.cfm and go.cfm and it works very well with no extra server configs.
