At a guess you're using MySQL 4.0.x - this version of MySQL doesn't support inner selects, which FarCry 3.0 requires. I'd suggest either using MySQL 4.1 or 5.x, FarCry 2.3.x, or MS SQL Server (runs nicely).
We've installed hundreds of Farcry instances with very few problems other than this (I just did it myself, incidentally!). We've never had to recycle ColdFusion during an install, either (not an easy thing for a hosting provider to do).
